Environmental Responsibility
At Six Senses Hideaway Samui our operations are reviewed day to day in order to lessen their environmental impact. Constantly we are looking for ways to save resources and improve our local environment. A selection of these environmental efforts is listed below.
Energy Conservation
Bio-diesel is an alternative to petroleum-based diesel fuel made from renewable resources such as vegetable oils and dry coconut. We recycle used vegetable oil from our kitchens to make 100% bio diesel. Our plant produces 200 to 400 liters per day. The dry coconut that we use is sourced from the local Samui community. This project enables us to put financial and human resources into the local community and protect the environment. The advantages of bio diesel are:
It reduces CO2 in the air.
It reduces odors.
It helps engines run smoothly and stay clean long term.
It reduces the running noise of the engine.
It reduces smoke.
At Six Senses Hideaway Samui we are currently using our bio diesel for several purposes including the gardener truck, fogging machine and host truck.
We also make our own bio-gas: we convert the gases that result from composting into energy. At Six Senses Hideaway Samui we use dry leaves from the resort's jungle and mix these with sewage water to make bio-gas to run the small generator we use at nursery area (a.o. for the water pump).
Water Conservation At Six Senses Hideaway Samui we have a special recycling center where we filter our waste water (Waste Water Treatment Plant). The grey water goes through a natural filtration system. This filter uses the waste water from the laundry and restroom area of our resort. This water is filtered and passes through different levels of filtration media from natural materials such as cana to rock, compost, sand and pine wood. After this the water is oxygenated. After this oxygenation it finally goes to the last filter which is composed of broken ceramic, charcoal and a sand wash #5. The water which comes out from this filter system is totally clean and hygienic and is used in our vegetable gardens. The plants really seem to thrive on it and as a result, we have more local produce for the kitchen or for selling.
Waste Management
At our Heart of the House we have set up a recycling centre. Here recyclables are collected and/or processed (such as separation and baling) in preparation to go back on the market or to recycle other common household items. The materials we recycle include: aluminum, plastic, glass, paper and organic waste.
Natural Surroundings
At Six Senses Hideaway & Spa, we grow our own organic foods where possible. We do this with Six Senses Hideaway Samui the use of three herbal gardens. The first garden is located just below the main restaurant, Dining on the Hill, and measures 364 square meters, it boasts a picturesque view over the gulf of Siam.
The second herbal garden located at Heart of House measures 3,328 square meters. The planted herbs are used for cooking or are grown for their beautiful foliage, delicate flowers or pleasant aroma. In line with our environmental policy, no insecticides are used in the herb garden and only recycled compost from our own property is used to feed the plants.
In April 2006, Six Senses Hideaway Samui introduced a third herbal garden. This new addition is located at the Spa and measures approximately 200 square meters. The herbs and fruits grown in this garden include: aloe vera, citrus hystrix and morning glory. The products from this garden are used to address the needs of guests visiting the spa. Guests are able to enjoy fresh, pure and indulging products that are grown especially for them, right next to the spa.
