20/20 VISION - Six Senses’ vision for 2020
The UN International Panel for Climate Change (IPCC) has issued a warning that the world must act fast to slash greenhouse emissions if we are to prevent climate change from reaching devastating levels. It is strongly recommended that by 2020 there should be a global reduction in C02 emissions to 20% below the emissions generated by the world in 1990.
Six Senses takes the position that this may in fact be too little too late. James Lavelock, Tim Flannery and James Hansen have supported this belief in recent statements and convincing forecasts that feedback loops - for example, methane released from the tundra; CO2 that is currently trapped under the receding glaciers of both poles; etc. – may well set off a series of self-reinforcing cataclysmic events. If this turned out to be true, it could render a large part of our planet uninhabitable, and could impact many destinations where Six Senses currently operates.
It is our goal to make the entire Six Senses portfolio not just zero carbon in our on-site operations by 20/20, but for us to actually implement programmes that will result in a net absorption of C02. In other words, each Six Senses controlled property will not emit any material amount of C02 in its operation and, additionally, its renewable energy will be used to provide neighbouring communities with a zero carbon emission source of power. Furthermore, each Six Senses property will manage the local planting of trees, supervised and monitored by the team on-site so that C02 is absorbed.
Six Senses will, thus, become not carbon neutral, not zero carbon or carbon free, but DECARBONIZING.
