My wife and I have just returned from holiday in Vietnam - we spent 9 nights in the Ana Mandara and I can`t praise it enough. From the moment we arrived we received a warm welcome, and we relaxed immediately in the beautiful hotel and surroundings. Been fortunate to stay in many lovely places all over the world but we both rate this as top of our list.
The hotel and facilities are excellent as you would expect - the location on the lovely beach only enhances the experience but for us the service is what defined the quality of our stay.... it was so professional, yet friendly - not stuffy as can happen in posh hotels.
The rooms are not the most luxurious we have ever experienced, but they are beautiful & had all the facilities we could hope for during our stay. We had a garden view room which was great & we didn't experience any road noise,
Breakfast was superb - huge choice and fantastic quality produce...add that to dining adjacent to the lovely beach and sea and its going to be hard to beat.
We only ate in the hotel one evening - whilst it was good it was very expensive by Nha Trang standards. There are so many good and very cheap restaurants in town the hotel struggled to compete in this one area. A 10minute walk will have you in the centre of the restaurant area.
I can also recommend the Six Sences Spa - had a massage one day as a treat and it was brilliant.
Finally - unfortunately we both got sick just before our arrival here(cleaned our teeth in tap water while on Halong Bay Junk...be warned!). After a few days of illness I rang reception to ask for an appointment with the onsite nurse. The hotel doctor arrived at our room 5minutes later and dispensed several medicines which had us both feeling much better quickly. When I asked for his bill he smiled widely & told me `It`s free!!....we want you to come back!` Impeccable service. We hope to return one day. We were collected from the local airport and driven to the hotel, where the general manager, Fernando, and front office manager, Lan, were waiting to greet us by name. While we were checked in, we sat in the bar with a cool lemongrass drink and a delicious passsionfruit sorbet. Lan then took us round the grounds to show us where everything was located, finishing in our room. It really was a wonderful welcome.
The room, however, was disappointing. It was not very large and in fact the narrow gap between the bed and cupboard gave it a rather cramped feel. The free standing cupboard was not especially large and yet it was the only storage space in the room, bar a single, shallow drawer in each bedside table. A chair and table were crammed in on one side of the bed, which is framed in a mosquito net. The decor was very plain no pictures and no colour. There safe in the cupboard was very small - too small to fit in an iPad, for example. In contrast the bathrooom was large, with a bath down one side and double basin on the other beneath a large mirror. There was no window or natural light. Nor was there any storage space; all your toiletries have to sit next to the sink or along the side of the bath. The aircon was good and there is a large central fan. You also have free, in room wi-fi, which was great, although it could be slow at times and took multiple attempts to log in the first time. Tell reception if you are having problems and they will send an IT specialist to your room asap. There was a telly and DVD player, minibar and complimentary tea / coffee.
Our room was "garden view", but what we got was "next to the road". It a busy road, with heavy traffic day and night. During the day drivers are constantly beeping their horns. This does stop at night, but the revving and rumbling from heavy vehicles does not. The sound of the aircon does drown out quite a bit of the noise, but if you are not used to sleeping to the noise of traffic, it is disturbing. Sorry if this sounds negative so far given the five stars I've rated it - it gets better!

After we settled in, I asked at reception if it was possible to change rooms to one with a bigger safe. I was told that all the safes are the same size, so I left it. The staff however had the idea that I wanted a different room in their heads and that was it. They mentioned to me several times that they hoped to have a room and promised to let me know. Someone checked out the following day and they searched all over the hotel to find me to see if I wanted it. They had obviously taken a copy of my passport photo when I checked in, but unfortunately for them I was dying my hair silver blonde when my passport photo was taken several years ago and at the moment I'm dyeing it black! The lady spent about two hours trying to find me. She did eventually and I'm so glad she went to all that trouble as the alternative room was much, much nicer. Mainly by being about 2m wider and 2m longer. This made a huge difference, as suddenly we had a spacious room and the "four poster" bed worked so much better in a space big enough to take it. The wardrobe was larger and although there was still no storage in the bathroom, it was a long room with the basins and bath along one side. This meant that the shelf at the end of the bath was in a useful place. The shower was also more powerful, which made my OH happy. This move transformed the holiday for me, and the more I saw of alternative places to stay in Nha Trang, the more I felt that we had made the right choice. So, if you book a garden room, you decidedly do not want 213 and you do want 216. I really want to emphasise that all I did was ask if I could change to a room with a bigger safe. I did not make a huge fuss as I had unpacked and if I wasn't getting a bigger safe, I couldn't really be bothered. The staff obviously knew how much nicer a room I could have and went right out of their way to move me.

So, the staff were absolutely lovely - very helpful, friendly, welcoming and as you can tell from the trouble they went to over our room, they really care about you having a nice holiday. Members of staff remembered us (by name) and asked how we were enjoying our trip. Some struggled with English - there are many different nationalities staying here - but English speakers liked to stop and chat about the weather and what were doing. Staff were also very quick to ask if they could help if they saw you looking even slightly like you might want assistance. Our water and power failed one evening (this isn't a first world country) we called reception and they were in our room in minutes. When we had trouble logging into the wi-fi they sent an IT man to help and checked several times that it was working ok. When we breakfasted late, someome came to tell us that it would soon be closing and would we like anything more to eat or drink before it shut. Staff members greeted us with smiles and made us fell truly welcome for the whole of our visit.

The six senses spa was really nice. The staff were friendly and did explain the process (when to undress, when to put the fetching disposable pants on) although they speak very softly which made them hard for me to understand at times. However, I understood clearly enough when they checked that the pressure of the massage was to my liking. My OH and I had treatments at the same time, in a large, pretty room. I had a scrub treatment first, which involved a shower to clean the scrub off in their high-walled garden.

The breakfast buffet is good with a huge selection of delicious fruits and cereals as well as cooked options (European and Vietnamese styles), although quite a lot of it uncovered - there aren't many flies about generally, but also there aren't none! There is a smoking section for those uncouth enough to smoke over breakfast. There is a wide room service menu and the prices for seemed better than the resto prices with the added advantage that you can eat on your front porch or in your air-conditioned room. Service is excellent of course - for example, I ordered a single glass of wine with my meal and the waiter brought out the whole bottle with him. He offered me the chance to taste it first (I appreciated this as I can tell a faulty wine when I taste it) plus he did the whole thing properly; showing me the label so I could see that it was indeed the wine that I had ordered. He poured out my glass. When setting the table for us, he made sure that our sorbets went in the fridge to keep cool and as he left he sneaked a few more drops into my wine glass. Once again showing how the staff here go out of their way to make your stay special.

The restaurants are pleasant of an evening, especially with the view over the bay but the prices are similar to what you would pay in a good UK restaurant and therefore many times what you will pay for an equally nice meal in Nha Trang. The town is about 15 minutes' stroll along a lit pavement or 80p by taxi. I thought it was well worth the money for the Vietnamese Street Market night at the pool restaurant, which was set up like a little street and was a fantastic way to experience a wide selection of local foods without the risks or an actual roadside vendor.

There is a gym, which is properly airconditioned and has a decent amount of equipment - two cross trainers, two running machines, a bike, two adjustable weight benches and a resistance station.

There are two pools. A larger one at one end, next to the gym and the kids' area. This pool was the more family-oriented one, with individual beds and lots of space. Closer to reception and next to the bar was a smaller pool with a series of beautiful day beds around it, each designed for two with co-ordinated cushions and a large shade. Although it is a very adult space, please note that it is not adults only and unfortunately some people did bring their children - babies even - here rather than to the family pool. Their noise sis detract from the peace, so we did suggest that the hotel think about making the small pool just for adults. The hotel also has a private beach, accessed directly from the grounds, with several comfortable beds under palm leaf umbrellas. On the beach and by the pool there are little red flags with a drinks menu on one side and a snack menu on the other. Make your choice, hold out the flag and someone will take your order in no time.

Note: I write my reviews as I go, while it is all fresh in my mind and then post them after I get home and have had time to reflect. My initial comments were made when we were in the original room and changing to a larger room made a big difference to my mind set. The safe being too small for my iPad is a bit of a "First World Problem" but I do think its one that the hotel can easily fix. Its not like the locals aren't glued to their phones too. The traffic noise is a let down, but you are not going to get away from that in Nha Trang. My main observation is that I have been blown away by the staff here. Although it is fair to say that Vietnamese people generally are courteous and helpful, I would still say that the staff at Ana Mandara stand out. They have contributed enormously to my high rating for this hotel. I have stayed in many high quality hotels and resorts, which has given me high expectations. However, although I haven't often found fault with the staff in other places, everyone here was a cut above. Fernando should be proud of them.

Absolute amazement as soon as you got off the plane. Drama free transfers with towel & water on arrival. Greeted like we'd been there before. We stayed 4 nights in the Ana Mandara Suite, could have lived there. Room was amazing, spacious, clean with every little thing thought of & individually wrapped..from all toiletries to extras like bug spray, sun lotion & electricity adapters. My only comment, no fluffy holiday robe for me! First night we had dinner at the hotel's special street market, although expensive for Vietnam prices, it was amazing. Cooked fresh to order in front of you, i was even game enough to try snail..surprisingly very tasty. Service was outstanding, every need pre-empted...i even got a fan when they could see i was hot, without asking. Buffet breakfast was outstanding.. my only wee complaint was no scrambled eggs or rotation of potato types...oh well, will have to have delicious crepes damn..:o) Pool staff & service were amazing. Staff remembered your name every time they saw you. Special mention to Shang & Tram. Very happy to chat and never missed a beat on a drinks! Spring rolls poolside, deliciously flaky pastry. We did the snorkeling also, Thanks Wang!. Was a great day ( except i forgot sunscreen in certain places that require sitting!) Our guide, Thua, was knowledgeable & friendly. We were provided with drinks & fresh fruit, also a treat. We had no problems ever getting a beach lounge or pool lounge. When in doubt use the sand! We also had no problems with any road or traffic noise. Another outstanding staff member was Lee (everywhere man) wherever he saw us, including room service, we got G'day Mate! (us being Aussies, highly appropriate) & a big smile. Beach was always clean & water was clear, sand- great for exfoliating. Sorry to say i didn't use the spa, the in town prices were way too tempting...Lotus spa, Lee, turned out to be pretty special, sorry!
Thoroughly enjoyed the General managers cocktail party, a great way to meet other guests & the hotel management team, Fernando, Dat & Jeevan. We went into town most nights, checked out the local scene, fun times at Booze Cruise bar & Texas bbq restaurant, great cheap everything. Not for families though...Reception staff were also amazing. Excellent English, just think taxi & it was already there. The final highlight would be the check out..(sad to go but..) we received a letter with our confirmed flight, albeit 30mins later, a schedule on when our bags would be picked up, when we should finalise our bill & an estimate of the bill so far..all went to plan like a dream...we are fairly well travelled, especially in Asia & work in the hospitality industry, so fairly picky, & nothing beats this resort - Customer Service , always genuine, food & beverage & rooms outstanding.. & a big plus for the environmental effort & looking after the local people. I adopted my Gekko :-) Thanks for the most amazing stay..cant believe it was only 4 days..and now 4 days ago..booo « less
