LAMEGO, Portugal – May 15, 2018 – Six Senses Douro Valley was awarded number one position in AFAR magazine's Travelers’ Choice Awards in the category of Best Vineyard Hotel. It was the only Portuguese resort featured in the nomination list. The magazine and successful platform, AFAR.com, give travelers a voice to select their must-visits across four categories – Hotels, Cruises, Outfitters and Destinations – capturing their imaginations and filling their travel calendars. In the second phase of this award selection, nominees are put through a rigorous 20-day open election with 60,000 AFAR readers casting their votes. The remaining three categories will be open to voters throughout the whole year of 2018.
This respected award is a testament to the cultural richness of the destination and the creativity of the resort team, its wellness offerings and experiences. Wellness and wine pair well in the successfully restored 19th century manor house. This was achieved through an innovative wine program, dedication to service, a knowledgeable and well-trained wine team and exceptional wine list offered in the resort's bars and restaurants.
The wine program at Six Senses goes beyond a mere wine list as the resort thinks of itself as a wine property and a showcase for the exceptional wines of the country. Daily wine tastings and private wine tastings held in the Wine Library are one of the great aspects of the successful wine program. An informative wine list which showcases the best of both Douro and Portugal plus a wine dispenser which is available 24 hours a day, allows guests to choose and taste wines by the glass, and add a cultural and fun aspect to the wine learning experience. Wine experiences outside the resort premises take guests to unique places in the region and at the same time introduce wine and Port wine in a very special approach. Walk and Taste to Port Knox starts with a walk up a hill through the neighboring vineyard that leads up to the affectionately named Port Knox; a cool wine cellar with ageing Ports. The owner of the property greets guests and guides them through a tasting drawn directly from the cask, including some very rare old wines.
Another unique experience is Wine With A View, which takes place in a vintage boat. While viewing the vineyards on both sides of the river guests taste a selection of wines to better understand how terroir influences the character of wine.
“This outstanding recognition by AFAR magazine reflects our commitment to consistent service excellence which could not have been possible without the efforts of our knowledgeable and passionate team,” said Nick Yarnell, general manager of Six Senses Douro Valley.
