Environmental and Social Sustainability Policy
Soneva Fushi by Six Senses is located on a densely vegetated tropical island that is surrounded by abundant marine life. Its unique setting in a pristine environment and its many cultural and economic interactions with neighbouring local communities are some of the resort’s main assets. Acknowledging these and pursuing sustainable development in general, Soneva Fushi by Six Senses is committed to monitoring and reducing the negative environmental and social impacts of its operations and is specifically concerned about protecting the environment and benefiting the local communities in the Maldives.
Soneva Fushi by Six Senses has created its Environmental Management System in accordance with the requirements of the Green Globe 21 Company Standard. On its path to achieving sustainability, it uses Green Globe 21 benchmarking indicators and monitors them. The resort strives to continually improve its environmental and social sustainability performance by making suitable year-to-year adjustments in relevant areas, should the sustainability indicators fall below the Green Globe 21 Best Practice level, while maintaining all other relevant aspects at, or better than, the Best Practice level.
Our environmental and social programmes for the next year will focus on the following key areas:
Cutting greenhouse gas emissions by reducing energy consumption, increasing energy efficiency and implementing renewable energy schemes;
Reducing resource consumption and waste generation through waste-reducing purchasing policies, reuse, recycling and composting programmes;
Preventing any escape of harmful substances into the environment;
Preserving the fragile island and coral reef ecosystem by avoiding air and water pollution, physical damage and over-use of resources;
Engaging local communities, preserving traditional skills of local islanders and actively employing local staff, service providers and suppliers wherever practicable;
Raising awareness of sustainable tourism and living amongst hosts, guests, local communities and suppliers through training programmes and regular environmental awareness events.
The resort commits to complying with the national environmental legislation and regulations and, where practicable, other relevant environmental standards.
Soneva Fushi’s Environmental Manager has the ultimate responsibility for ensuring ongoing environmental performance, the identification of environmental risks, the recording and monitoring of impacts and the implementation of environmental and social sustainability measures. The General Manager of Soneva Fushi by Six Senses is responsible for ensuring that all of the above is implemented and adhered to. The remaining hosts are committed to complying with all environmental and social actions taken and are encouraged to promote the resort’s commitment to greater sustainability.
