Soneva Gili believes that the success of its strategies depends, amongst other things, on its ability to attract and retain appropriately qualified and motivated hosts. In doing so, we provide them with a safe working environment and the necessary training and development to fulfill their roles. Environmental education and awareness is an integral part of the environmental management system at Soneva Gili. Environmental awareness-training programmes, targeted for the hosts of the resort, have been developed in order for them to make environmentally informed decisions daily. The management also seeks strong support and participation from the tourists, tour guides and travel agents in order to develop a culture of proactive environmental awareness.
All hosts are required to undergo a Green Module, once a year, and attendance of this course is recorded. This course will further be revised to incorporate the most relevant information this year.
The management gives high priority to the creation of environmental awareness among the guests. Environmental awareness is created through displays, management action and supporting programmes.
Knowing what the resort does and what the resort could do to protect the environment and to keep it unspoiled is the first step to minimize environmental damage. All the guests are shown our organic vegetable garden and are briefed on how such a garden can help improve the quality of the environment. Soneva Gili provides cross training to its employees with other hotels and resorts, both within and outside the group. Newly recruited hosts undergo an induction and orientation programme as part of the host development. The training programme focuses on Six Senses core values, and the development concept of Soneva Gili’s terrestrial and marine environment.
All job descriptions include an environmental section. Host members are required to protect the environment and be as economical as possible with resources and materials used in the job, including electricity, paper and water. When new host members join the resort orientation training includes a session on the environment, the work of the resort’s environmental committee, and how they can participate in environmental activities. Much emphasis is given to encourage host members to adopt good housekeeping actions.
