Girl Guide Eco Outing

Each year we support and fund a week-long, environmental camp organized by Maldives Girl Guides Association, where several scouts and girl guides will undergo environmental awareness programmes and training ranging from global warming, to waste management, to marine ecosystem. This has been very successful.

Kids Awareness Programme

We bring school children on field trips to the resort and tour them through our environmental initiatives. This includes energy saving, waste management, eco design and concepts, etc. Students also get to voice their concerns and ask questions that are answered by professionals in the resort.

Coral Reef Library

This environmental library is targeted to school children in the Capital, Male'. We supported and funded this library in 2005, and many students from various schools in Male' are benefiting from this library.

Clean Up Community

In partnership with Hulhu Male' Development Corporation (HDC), we continue a year long campaign 'Leave only footprints' in this newly populated island. In addition to providing financial assistance, we also actively participate in trying to raise awareness and facilitating better clean up opportunities for the residents. In addition, we also conduct regular clean up events in our neighboring Himmafushi Island - our hosts join with the residents to help them clean their community.

Each One, Ten Plants

A small island community of about 600 residents has devoted its time to increase environmental awareness among its residents by planting 10 trees per person. We have provided financial and landscaping support for this community and trained locals to look after the plantation on the island.

Live and Learn

Live and Learn is a Fiji-based environmental NGO that conducts assessments and educational programmes for local island communities and resorts. We have joined with them to design programmes that will deliver results in increasing awareness among our hosts in the resort.

Helping Thalassemia Children

Thalassemia is a group of genetic blood diseases involving decreased and defective production of hemoglobin that vary widely in severity. To treat this disease, a child should receive blood continually or a bone marrow surgery has to be performed. Society for Health Education (SHE) has initiated a country-wide programme to raise awareness and to help these children by means of supplying blood and other facilities. We continually support both financially and by donating blood to this group. Last year alone, more than 85% of our hosts kindly donated blood.

Helping Handicapped

Maldives has a considerable number of children handicapped or mentally retarded and has very limited facilities to improve their quality of life. For this reason we funded and technically supported a laboratory for mentally retarded children in Jamaluddin School in Male.

We are also in the process of sponsoring a project carried out by CARE Society, Maldives, to provide better education and facilities for handicapped children in Maldives.

National Health Promotion

We carefully identify rural islands, including our neighbors, that have a strong need for the enhancement of health services. Under this programme we have donated laboratories, clinical and administrative equipment and even helped them train themselves to deliver better health services to the communities.

Computer Education in Rural Areas

Schools in rural areas of the country receive minimal aid in terms of improving the quality of education and enhancement of the facilities. With this in mind we donated computers to Maafushi and Himmafushi schools in two regions of the country last year. This is a part of an ongoing programme and is expected to continue for many years to come.

Soneva Career Fair

Soneva Career Fair is an annual career opportunities and counseling fair organized by both Soneva Fushi and Soneva Gili in Maldives. This fair is held to inform school leavers and people seeking career possibilities in resorts about opportunities in the hospitality industry. Last year about 1000 people visited the fair.

Yaki's Childrens Park

Soneva Gili supports local communities in a number of ways. For example, this small island community has no facilities for children to spend time with their families and loved ones. This is why we have supported the island in building a park for children which will benefit them while they grow up.

Empowering Local NGOs

We try to empower NGOs at the local level to help them sustain and procure developmental opportunities from outside donors.
