September 7, 2020 - Wherever we are in the world, we care for our habitats and inhabitants, whether human, hornbill or hammerhead. On land or under water, there’s no glass screen. You don’t watch dolphins in an aquarium; they swim past you during breakfast.
Away from the pressures of surface life, the alternative underwater world is a place of peace and tranquility. This is combined with the euphoria, awe and many say emotion, of sharing a fleeting connection with a passing green turtle or manta ray.
Six Senses Laamu in the Maldives is home to Hithadhoo Corner and more than 120 resident manta rays, which researchers from the Manta Trust have been studying since 2014. From May to July and October to November, courtship is high on the mantas’ minds. The rare manta chain dance is truly a once in a lifetime experience to witness, during which the female tests the males’ strength by leading them on a dance, looping and swerving until there is only one male left.
Laamu has the only year-round manta ray cleaning station in the Maldives as well as the world’s first non-invasive underwater ultrasound scanner. This leading conservation effort enables contactless scanning of wild pregnant reef manta rays to study gestation and embryonic development. This information is vital to guide conservation strategies.
Join Nicole from the Manta Trust to learn more about our gentle giants as part of our Junior Marine Biology course, which is still online, along with virtual reality footage taken recently just off our atoll.
The waters around Con Dao in Vietnam are at their clearest during February to July, with visibility averaging around 70 to 100 feet (20 to 30 meters) to get up close to a plethora of marine life. Conditions are also at their best (little wind, low tidal movement) to access Vietnam's only underwater shipwreck. The dive center at Six Senses Con Dao prides itself on the extensive experience of its instructors coupled with their local knowledge. They can organize dive trips for certified and non-certified divers along with a range of PADI courses.
You don’t even need to get your feet wet to learn about our green turtle incubation and research project. This ambitious project in cooperation with Con Dao National Park authorities includes a safe incubation enclosure to protect eggs from threats such as poaching. From May to October, you might be lucky enough to watch a sea turtle lay her eggs right on our beach, and from July to November you can also participate in our ethical hatchling releases.
In the crystal-clear waters of the Mamanuca Islands archipelago off the palm-fringed shores of Six Senses Fiji, the Supermarket dive site is a springboard to thrilling encounters. Expect to see green and hawksbill turtles along with schools of barracuda, colorful fusiliers and gray reef sharks, which cruise along the reef wall. On top of the reef, divers (PADI courses available for beginners) and snorkelers can often see clown fish, angel fish and parrot fish.
Back on dry land, and as night falls, join our Experiences team on an adventure through the greenery where you can spot a Fijian Crested Iguana or two resting high on the branches in their natural habitat. From just 17 at our time of opening in 2018, we now know of 39 that live protected inside the resort’s forested area. Meet our iguanas first hand and lock in your trip to Six Senses Fiji early to receive a host of extras as part of our Book Now, Stay Later offer. Our 100% solar powered sanctuary has a choice of 24 spacious villas and 60 luxury residences, most of which open out directly onto the beach.
We’re also helping to preserve and increase the population of endangered animals at Six Senses Ninh Van Bay in Vietnam. In a recent study, conducted in cooperation with the GreenViet Biodiversity Conservation Centre (GreenViet), we were delighted to see an increase in our resident black-shanked douc langur population. Between April 2019 and February 2020, we recorded 78 adults, 18 of which are sub-adults, 13 juveniles (naughty teenage monkeys!) and five babies.
We are very proud to provide an ideal home to our douc langur families with an abundance of food and good protection. They tend to hang out around the reservoir (especially during the dry season), rocks on the mountain, streams near the spa, Elephant Mountain and restaurant. They are very shy and if you encounter them during your stay, this experience is both exciting and humbling. A massive thanks to all of our guests as a portion of every stay goes directly to our sustainability funds at each property. These are used locally to fund important work such as this as well as environmental and social projects.
Numbers of Oriental Pied Hornbills have sadly dwindled in recent years. Our vegetation surrounding Six Senses Yao Noi bears the fruit that is a staple of their diet. Look up into the trees to see if you can spot them feeding. Our partnership with the Thailand Hornbill Project ensures we're doing everything we can to help our most iconic wildlife on the island.
For example, as part of our Grow With Six Senses initiative for children, we’ve recently launched our Junior Eco Warrior Program, where it’s all hands on deck to build nests for our feathered VIPs. We call them Hornbill Villas. Rest assured, our guest villas offer all the creature comforts for humans too, including from one to four bedrooms, private infinity pools and dramatic bay or romantic forest views. Check out our range of Extended Stay offers for extra savings during your time on this island hideaway.
Six Senses Shaharut will open in December. Our first Israel location takes you to the Negev Desert, which is quite possibly the epitome of desert landscapes. One of the most beautiful ways to explore the dunes, suitable for the whole family, is a guided morning or evening camel trek. You can either rise before dawn to marvel as the first rays of the day settle on the Edom mountains or head out at twilight as evening descends to watch as the skies above you are set ablaze in vibrant copper hues.
The camel trek experience is included for guests booking three consecutive nights or more for holidays completed by the end of February 2021. For more details about our Opening Offer, reservations and travel arrangements, please email the resort’s reservation team at [email protected].
Every day is hump day at Six Senses Zighy Bay, Oman. From novice to adopted Bedouin, Simon our Experiences Manager has been looking after the resort’s family of camels since 2017. Over the past two years he’s been writing and illustrating a children’s comic documenting the adventures that they get up to.
As part of our recent #SixWeeksOfSummer campaign, he shared his first story. So on that note settle down, press play and enjoy our happily ever after. Click here.
