By World Sleep Day on 19 March, many of us will have been in and out of lockdown for almost a year. While five portions of fruit and veg a day and 10,000 steps are arbitrary figures invented for advertising campaigns, the recommended seven to nine hours of sleep a night remains unanimous advice.

However, our sleep health also depends on what happens when our eyes are shut.

Andrew Holecek, expert Dream Yogi and Friend of Six Senses will be opening our minds to the Tibetan nocturnal practices of lucid dreaming and dream yoga on March 23, 12:00 pm EST, 5:00 pm UK time. You can join via @SixSenses Facebook.

What is a nocturnal practice? How do you do it? Why would you want to?

Lucid dreaming is the practice of waking up in your dreams and being able to control your dream experiences for expanded consciousness. Have you ever been aware that you’re dreaming? If so, you’ve already had a taste of lucid dreaming.

According to Andrew, this can be incredibly healing. If you’re experiencing a conflict with someone or have some unfinished business, for example, you can use your imagination to actively role play a conversation with that person. When you conjure them up in a dream and resolve the conflict in this dream space, it’s more real and impacts your brain at a deeper level.

As Andrew says, it’s not just for resolving conflicts but a way to have the time of your life in the privacy of your mind. It can be used for psychological development or spiritual fulfilment, depending on your desires.

Purpose and benefit

There are so many practices that have been developed by yogis over the centuries. To become a lucid dreamer or a dream yogi, you can begin with daytime preparatory practices where you seed ideas into your mind that will be activated during your dream state. It begins with specific meditations in order to create more awareness. Waking awareness transfers over to dreaming awareness. Andrew will be showing us how this is done on March 23.

After some practice, you may find images and ideas from your dreams showing up in your waking life because these practices dissolve the wall between dreaming and waking. It is a way for you to communicate with your unconscious, which drives much of our dreaming, and for your unconscious to communicate back to you during your waking hours.

The practice of lucid dreaming and dream yoga helps us dissolve the solidity of our waking lives and in that process, suffering decreases and awakening is possible.

Andrew Holecek is an author and spiritual teacher who offers talks, online courses, and workshops.
