January 16, 2020 - The stresses and strains of working or parenting can lead to an imbalance in brain activity. We’re quick to anger, become tired and overwhelmed and find it hard to turn off and sleep at night. How can a brain spa help?
Nearly two-thirds of people with a known mental disorder never seek help from a health professional according to the World Health Organization. Stigma, discrimination and neglect prevent care and treatment from reaching people. This puts much of the burden on the individual and their families to cope with these issues.
The WHO report says some mental disorders can be prevented and most mental and behavioral disorders can be successfully treated. New research is impacting how individuals, societies and the public health community deal with mental disorders.
Dr. Claudia Aguirre, who joined forces with the Six Senses Wellness board in 2018, agrees:
“I believe ‘brain spas’, guided by a healthcare professional, will rise in this decade as more and more people seek out wellness centers over hospitals. You will likely see a combination of ancient, holistic wisdom with modern, high-tech equipment and techniques.”
The philosophy of blended therapies is central to the Holistic Anti-Aging Center, which has been gradually introduced at selected Six Senses Spas under the supervision of Dr. Claudia. She believes there are more exciting developments to come in the future:
“For example, meditation and sound therapies have been around for decades, but in these types of spas, you will find equipment that combines the two modalities (using sound frequencies to enhance the meditative experience) with the ability to measure the outcomes with EEG or physiologic stress responses.”
Another subject that Dr. Claudia is keen to explore is how brain spas deal with mixed reality:
“Already, there is substantial positive feedback from using virtual reality to clinically improve a patient’s psychological, cognitive, and motor abilities, especially those suffering from PTSD. Mixed reality, whether on a screen or with augmented reality, will also help modulate the stress response and expand possibilities in people suffering from stress, anxiety, injury or trauma, or even people who just need the occasional mental refresher."
With anything that shows up outwardly – whether an out-of-character reaction to a situation or a stubborn patch of eczema – Dr. Claudia believes in looking inwards to find patterns:
“Going on a structured program really opens your eyes to sleep and diet, as well as habits that may have formed over the years and the negative impact they are having on your body. For example, break-outs on the skin could be related to our cycle if they’re occurring every month, or from raised stress levels. They can also be down to inflammation in the body because disrupted sleep patterns can impact your inflammatory state. Holistic Anti-Aging Center is better than just a break, because a vacation relaxes you but doesn’t set you up with anything proactive to follow when you get home.”
All guests on the Holistic Anti-Aging program learn about positive affirmations and receive ongoing support through guidance videos and a journal to take home. You also have the opportunity to change your relationship to diet, becoming more mindful about what you eat and how you move:
“As a neuroscientist, I use the body to reach a state of mind that is more balanced and appreciative of what we have that will result in a healthier gut, skin and mind. And the benefits can last a lifetime.”
Cleanse, restore and nourish
The Holistic Anti-Aging program consists of three key stages: cleanse, restore and nourish. It is an active journey, which starts with a wellness screening, and skin and sleep analysis so that experts can personalize the program to suit your specific needs. Self-guided activities embrace mindfulness and include mental cleanse, journaling and affirmation practices to look without judgment and celebrate what you see.
The accompanying nutritional plan is based on an anti-inflammatory approach, using fresh, mineral-rich foods that are abundant in antioxidants to fight free radical damage to skin, hair and nails. Through this program, you will come to understand that outer beauty comes from a healthy body and a happy mind, just as much as proper skincare.
