In the broader sense, we also form strategic partnerships with NGOs around conservation, community, culture, and commerce. This includes being one of the first signatories of the Global Tourism Plastics Initiative, led by the UN Environment Programme and UN World Tourism Organization, and collaborating with the United States Coalition on Sustainability and SustainChain™ to connect initiatives and scale solutions.
Our efforts to eliminate single-use plastic are on track. This includes eliminating the brand’s “18 Most Unwanted” items, everything from guest amenities to behind-the-scenes material such as coffee pods and fruit packaging. It also means sourcing plastic-free products, arranging packaging take-back, bottling drinking water on property, and sharing best practices.
We’ve always emphasized becoming self-sustaining, regenerative, plastic-free and collaborative with NGOs around conservation, community, culture, and commerce. But what does that mean in real terms, counting every bottle, turtle, and coral fragment?
Environmental and social responsibility is at the heart of the Six Senses approach. That’s why we join individuals, travel, and other companies in declaring a climate emergency and highlighting the seriousness of human impacts brought about by climate change. Many of these are disproportionately felt by communities in the global south and by younger and future generations.
Over 80 percent of the drinking water tested globally reveals microplastic, transferring toxic chemicals when consumed. Our target is to operate completely free of plastic from 2022, as part of our Global Tourism Plastics Initiative pledge.
