Six Senses Sustainability

Plastic Freedom 2022

Within the world of hospitality, Six Senses is continuing to pioneer in wellness and sustainability. One day, one guest, one story at a time.

Watch the video above to see how our journey to Plastic Freedom is made of many journeys. Every single time a single-use plastic isn’t used in a Six Senses resort is yet another good news story. So welcome to just one of them. Since we eradicated single-use plastics, bottles like this one have thousands of stories to tell, and will have many more to come!

By focusing on our “18 Most Unwanted” such as plastic bottles in 2022, we are prioritizing the elimination of single-use and virgin plastic sourcing and adopting circular solutions through supplier engagement. Along the way we have developed some great new best practices.

Our commitments

By focusing on our “18 Most Unwanted”, such as plastic bottles in 2022, we are prioritizing the elimination of single-use and virgin plastic sourcing and adopting circular solutions through supplier engagement. Along the way, we have developed some great new best practices.

By the end of 2022, we have committed to:

  • eliminate all unnecessary plastic packaging of bathroom amenities, room amenities, and retail spaces.
  • introduce more reusable solutions in the kitchens to replace cling film and plastic packaging of fresh products.
  • source naturally compostable packing and other materials where appropriate by engaging with our suppliers.
  • working with other hotels and industry partners to share best practices, supplier recommendations, and other information to help us all move away from plastic.
  • eliminate more than 1.5 million plastic bottles, by bottling our own drinking water in reusable glass bottles.
  • use natural materials to substitute everything from plastic straws to toothbrushes, and also crates, cloth bags, bottles, and containers that can be reused and refilled.

Our partnerships

In the broader sense, we also form strategic partnerships with NGOs around conservation, community, culture, and commerce. This includes being one of the first signatories of the Global Tourism Plastics Initiative, led by the UN Environment Programme and UN World Tourism Organization, and collaborating with the United States Coalition on Sustainability and SustainChain™ to connect initiatives and scale solutions.

Plastic Freedom 2022

Our efforts to eliminate single-use plastic are on track. This includes eliminating the brand’s “18 Most Unwanted” items, everything from guest amenities to behind-the-scenes material such as coffee pods and fruit packaging. It also means sourcing plastic-free products, arranging packaging take-back, bottling drinking water on property, and sharing best practices.
