Nutrition 2020: what’s fact, what’s fad?

A fad diet is the kind of plan where you eat a restrictive diet with few foods or an unusual combination of foods for a short period of time. Sometimes this leads to weight loss. However, most people then get fed up with the restrictions, start eating more, choose less healthy foods and pile the pounds back on. As well as being a waste of time and money, some “miracle diets” can risk your health.

So what does work?

We believe that the best diet is not actually a diet at all, but a way of life that includes food you enjoy, exercise, and healthy habits. Being more thoughtful about what you eat includes being more thoughtful as you eat. This means avoiding distractions so you are completely present as you chew each mouthful and really enjoy the flavor and sensation.

Our Eat With Six Senses philosophy underpins our approach to food and drink. It is based on the guiding principles of natural ingredients, local and sustainable, and less is more, helping all of our guests to reconnect with food safe in the knowledge that it’s good for them, and good for the world around them.

Research from the University of Oxford reveals the importance of not just what you eat but who you eat it with. Eating together plays a key role in social bonding and the development of community life – as well as the happiness and well-being of individuals within that community. The act of talking and listening also slows down the eating process, improving digestion. Across Six Senses properties, eating is a social occasion. Enjoy cooking classes, wine evenings, Chef’s Tables and degustation dinners – just bring a smile.

Head of our table 2020

  • By producing and bottling our own water, we eliminate over 1.6 million plastic bottles from the planet each year (and you won’t find plastic straws anywhere either).
  • We adopt a Zero Waste philosophy and have eliminated a lot of our plastic already as part of our Plastic Free 2022 initiative.
  • We make homemade probiotics and tonics at some of our resorts to boost the diversity of the good bacteria (gut buddies) living in our guts. From kefir, kimchi and kombucha to sauerkraut and miso: all fermented foods are in full flow across our restaurants.
  • All Six Senses properties cultivate their own organic vegetable garden, and two resorts – Six Senses Ninh Van Bay and Six Senses Yao Noi – manage their own mushroom huts.
  • Coconuts are a natural and local resource at many Six Senses properties. The medium-chain triglycerides in coconut oil have been shown to increase calories burned over 24 hours by as much as 5 percent.
  • At Six Senses resorts, tempting ice-cream treats are handmade, full of local, healthy ingredients and a spectrum of natural flavors: the only thing missing is the bad stuff!
