You are barefoot on the yoga mat. Sweat glistens on your back. You crouch to touch the floor and – like a phoenix rising from the ashes of a bad day – explode upwards, heart open, lungs firing out a “ha”. You repeat. With each “ha” you release. You are conscious of but not bothered by your fellow warriors as you’re somehow all in this together – not just getting better but getting better together. Your headphones serve as both protection and connection. Right now, you know everyone is listening to the same dynamic tribal beats, and their attention is focused inward, rootling around for the happiness that lies within them, and not judging you, while Luuk shouts “on three, throw your arms in the air”, which you all sort of manage together, so you’re not just an out-of-sync dork on a mat, but part of a community. You’re free.
Let’s explain.
Sanctum is a nomadic, global community founded by Luuk Melisse and Gabriel Olszewski in 2020 in Amsterdam and now forming part of our retreat series at Six Senses Ibiza, Six Senses Crans-Montana, and Six Senses Rome. With influences including kundalini, Native American vision quests, Buddhist therapies, primal movement, t'ai chi, and “ha” chanting from Japanese martial arts, the blueprinted Sanctum sequence – part dance, part aerobics, part breathwork, part your own free expression – guides you to release and let go. The Sanctum class is a multi-sensorial experience that will trigger hidden parts of your personality, enabling self-discovery and deeper connection as you are guided via curated music and storytelling to celebrate your “me” and the joy of “we”.
The Sanctum Infinite-Self and Community Club at Six Senses Rome translates this vision into our first-ever urban retreat that offers both an escape and a sensory-rich journey, all just steps away from historic landmarks and glorious works of art.
Answering how a retreat in a hotel in downtown Rome might differ from a retreat in a secluded setting, Six Senses Director of Wellness Marketing Anna Ramsay explains, “My take on this is that energy gives you energy. Sometimes we need peace to achieve peace of mind and other times, much like how with exercise you feel more energy once you get started, a city break in Rome can rejuvenate your soul and bring back your spark. Couple this with Sanctum and you might just run home.”
Sanctum’s Co-founder and CEO Gabriel Olszewski elaborates, “We create the opportunity to get away from it all in the middle of it all through a deep sense of community and belonging. That’s what we mean by social wellness. During our Sanctum Retreat at Six Senses Rome, you can expect self-discovery with elements of social wellness at its highest potential. Furthermore, we will weave in the vast heritage of Rome and a deep sense of community into the framework of our unrivaled mindful movement. Combined with the Roman Bathing rituals, communal feasts, and luxury accommodation, the highlight of the retreat will be cathartic heritage walks during which we will move mindfully to release, recalibrate, and receive, while exploring most picturesque landmarks of Rome.”
You can choose to join us for one to three days, including or excluding accommodation. The full three-day experience includes two nights in a Classic room, breakfast, communal lunch and dinner, daily Sanctum classes, two hours in our Roman Baths, a full-body massage, and a heritage mindful walk.
Every Six Senses Spa around the world has prepared a schedule of activities. Depending on the location, you can enjoy experiences at sunrise or sunset, on the beach or in the forest, on the jetty or the roof terrace. Each spa team has chosen a location that evokes a sense of wellness, and most are running a full day of dancing fun.
