VP TALKS: Peaceful sleep ritual

A note from Susie Mermaid, Six Senses Visiting Practitioner:

“At least an hour before you go to bed put away all tech devices with blue light. It’s time to start setting your mind to a more peaceful state. It’s important we watch the news but it can be anxiety inducing, so limit news to once a day and not before bed.

Having a warm soothing bath, this is the perfect way to relax the body, mind and spirit and you can make this time nurturing and personal for you. Light candles to create harmonious soft lighting, play your favorite most beautiful music to allow your mind to escape any worries, choose a bath oil with a relaxing scent that you love to provide serenity for your senses.

After bathing wrap yourself in a cozy dressing gown and get comfortable to focus on some deep breathing to aid peaceful rest. You may lie on your back, it’s important to be warm and comfortable, so get lots of cushions and make a den, place the palms of your hands on your stomach, take you focus to your breathing, feel the sensation of your breath in your nostrils, as you inhale feel your tummy rise and as you exhale feel it soften and sink, you may choose to have the sounds of the sea gently playing in the background, feel the ebb and flow of your breath in time with the rise and retreat of your abdomen, and let the sounds of the waves lull you into peaceful rest.

Reading a gentle book will always transport you and can help to ease you into sleep.”

Susie Mermaid’s bedtime reading list

  • The Soul of an Octopus by Sy Montgomery
  • Mermaids, The myths, Legends and Lores by Skye Alexander
  • Gift from the Sea by Anne Morrow Lindbergh
