Green Excellence Award
Six Senses Samui’s big UK win
Six Senses Samui joined with Six Senses Yao Noi to be named joint winners of the Green Excellence Awards UK 2017 at a ceremony held at World Travel Market in London and sponsored by the Tourism Authority of Thailand.
Launched in 2007 by the London office of the Tourism Authority of Thailand, the Thailand Green Excellence Awards UK recognize and celebrate organizations in the travel and tourism sectors that have made an outstanding contribution to growing Thailand as a sustainable destination. The Green Excellence Award was shared by Thailand’s two Six Senses resorts - Six Senses Samui and Six Senses Yao Noi.
Six Senses Samui’s Farm on the Hill and Earth Lab began as small home-grown initiatives to support the resort’s commitment to sustainability, yet in a short time have grown into a positive example of what can be done with strong conviction and passion to self-improve. The projects have inspired the resort team and the local community, who actively participate in the upkeep and in some cases have replicated the programs in their own homes. The farm is only the start of a much larger transformation, with works currently underway to improve the environmental impact from the resort’s facilities, guest villas, and even by making the landscaping more purposeful.
Six Senses Yao Noi is a pioneer in many of the sustainable initiatives by the Six Senses group. With the launch of Earth Lab, the resort has already developed many areas such as the Chicken Farm, Goat Farm, organic gardens, workshops and resort practices. In addition to the availability of sustainable resources to the kitchen and spa, both guests and hosts are also given an opportunity to be educated through active participation. Local community and schools also benefit when they tour the resort to learn about the new initiatives, by being equipped with the knowledge to improve their daily lives and facilities. Ongoing commitments towards sustainability continue at Six Senses Yao Noi, which has recently developed a timber yard to reduce timber wastage and up-cycling the material to re-purposed items or renewable energy.
There are seven award categories in total, namely Nature & Heritage, Marine, Community Based Tourism, Animal Welfare, Eco Lodge/Hotel, Hotel and Green Steps. The nomination process was completed by either a member of the organization or general public who visited the property.
