We stayed for a week at Ninh Van Bay after a few days in Ho Chi Minh City & Nha Trang. We were hoping our stay there would be the highlight of our trip to Vietnam and it exceeded all our expectations.
Where to start....the resort is hard to spot as you approach by boat and it's only as you get close in to shore that the villas built amongst the rocks become apparent. This was our first time in a Six Senses resort (hopefully not the last) so it's hard to say whether Ninh Van Bay is typical of other properties but one of the things we really loved is the ethos of the place; this is exemplified by the way the resort blends in and compliments the amazing natural scenery rather than contrasting against it.
On arrival were we met by our butler, Hon who took us to our Villa - Hilltop Villa 7. As has been previously mentioned, there are some steps and "Hilltop" Villa is as described, however every step is more than compensated for by the amazing views over the bay and the complete privacy. We spent some time in a beach villa before check out on our last day and, lovely though it was, much preferred our Hilltop villa.
The Villa - Large bedroom, very comfortable bed with view through huge glass doors over the bay! Mosquito net provided but we didn't find there was any problem with insect wildlife. Indoor and outdoor bathrooms; we loved the outdoor shower and the bathtub (both with views over the bay.) We had separate living accommodation, an upstairs lounge / dining room which was a great place for breakfast - with the same amazing view. Air conditioning in both the main villa and the "living" villa.
Private deck with sun loungers & dip pool a real, sun-trap in the mornings and pleasantly shady in the afternoon.
Dining by the Bay, the main restaurant - This was the opposite side of the bay to our villa but a call to Hon meant he met us at the bottom of the steps with a golf buggy to drive us there. We dined here 3 times, and found an excellent choice of Vietnamese & international cuisine. The breakfast buffet is served here, this was equally good although we also enjoyed room service breakfast brought (up the steps) to the villa at no extra charge.
Dining by the rocks - the signature restaurant - fabulous food in a perfect setting.
Some evenings the resort organises buffet meals by the pool (which is centrally located). We went to the Vietnamese market buffet which was incredible - a really good way to try lots of different kinds of food - the choice was almost overwhelming.
Drinks by the Bay serves "tapas" and one evening we had a lighter meal of a few dishes beautifully presented and absolutely delicious.
Our butler, Hon explained to us all that the resort had to offer and arranged everything during our stay. I wasn't sure how I would feel about having a "personal butler" but it in reality it was lovely to have a single point of contact who gave us all the information we needed to make the most of our holiday. He arranged restaurant reservations and boat trips and also a complimentary visit to the spa. We took two sunset cruises, the first on a larger boat & the second a private trip for two, I'm not sure we would have done this if it hadn't been arranged for us but we were so glad we did, it was fascinating to see the fishermen on their floating homes in the bay.
It's hard to put into words the best thing about Six Senses Ninh Van Bay which is the "feel" of the place. It's visually stunning and equipped with everything I would expect of a five star resort but most importantly it's a very comfortable and relaxing place to be. All the staff are charming and certainly give the impression that they enjoy being there; everyone greets you with a smile and "xin chao" (sin chow). It's a luxury resort but not luxurious; attention to every detail in but in a very understated way.
Finally I must mention Gary Henden the general manager & Gary Chan who were always present & visible; from greeting us on arrival to waving us off at the end and chatting to us during our stay checking everything was Ok --it was!

My wife and I have visited a number of Six Senses properties in the past and it would be fair to say that the brand sets the bar high in every area, offering amazing locations, beautifully designed properties and impeccable service; fortunately Ninh Van Bay meets and exceeds expectations. We arrived for our 5 night stay in the late evening after a short transfer from Cam Ranh international airport by car and speedboat (Ninh Van Bay is only accessible by boat). Arriving at night we didn't immediately appreciate the spectacular nature of the setting; the beautifully designed villas nestle in the rocks and forest of a perfect horseshoe bay, overlooking the East Vietnam Sea. The resort as a whole blends seamlessly with the dramatic hills and rock formations of the coast and the white sand beach and turquoise sea are everything you would expect from a desert island hideaway, only it's not an island.

For the first part of our stay we were in a beachfront villa, which is blissfully private, offering immediate access to but also shady relief from the sun drenched beach. The villa is set over two floors with the bedroom and bathroom downstairs and an open living area upstairs. Pulling back the shutters and sliding doors on the first morning to see the private pool with the sea beyond was a moment of blissful release.

The staff at Ninh Van Bay are friendly and attentive, always available but never imposing. The main restaurant offers a wide range of well prepared dishes made from locally sourced ingredients, whilst dining at the Rocks offers a more exclusive experience and a spectacular view of the bay.

As well as the expected culinary delights and exceptional accommodation, Ninh Van Bay also offers a variety of activities, which really enhance the stay. The cookery course was not something we expected to find thrilling but it turned out to be an informative and inspiring tour of the organic herb garden, combined with an insightful and delicious exploration of Vietnamese cooking. Snorkelling in Ninh Van Bay is also a huge pleasure as the reef teams with brightly coloured tropical fish. Six Senses pride themselves on their environmental credentials; maintenance and development of the reef is just one aspect of their extensive sustainability programme. Perhaps the highlight in terms of activities was the one and a half hour trek from Ninh Van Bay to a nearby private beach, taking in the spectacular surrounding hills and jungle. We left early and a boat met us on arrival, setting up a delicious breakfast in the shade of a tree (it was very hot); we were then left alone for two hours to soak up the peace, tranquility and isolation before being picked up and taken back to the resort.

All in all the stay offered a perfect combination of relaxation and stimulation, topped off by our last night stay in one of the truly exceptional rock villas. These villas are the unique selling point of Ninh Van Bay; suffice to say, sitting in the huge wooden bathtub, watching the sun go down over the sea and listening to the waves lap against the rocks below is truely unforgettable. On the last day as the speedboat pulled away and Ninh Van Bay retreated in to the distance, we both felt the wrench of leaving a place that will stay firmly in our memory for a long time to come. « less
