Breathwork for a Calm Mind with Visiting Practitioner, Sandro

Breathing has a huge impact on our autonomic nervous system so breathing coach, Sandro, shares a 2-step practice to use the breath to defuse stressful emotions or calm an anxious mind at bedtime.

1. Awareness

The first step to using the breath to improve your life is to observe the breath. Close your eyes and observe how you are breathing. Ask yourself, “How fast am I breathing, am I breathing through my nose or mouth?”

2. Breathing Consciously

The second step is to now manipulate the breath for greatest impact. First, inhale through your nose and exhale through your mouth. Inflate your entire lung, down to your belly, make sure your jaw is relaxed. Then, inhale for 4 counts and exhale for 6 counts – all through your nose. When your exhalation is longer than your inhalation, it relaxes your nervous system. Continue to do this until you notice a shift. It’s a great practice to do in bed if you are having difficulty falling asleep.

These nourishing and warm autumn colors tell us, just like the tree that’s shedding its leaves, that it’s time let out a deep sigh for all the hard work of spring and summer and time to let go of what is no longer needed, and to prepare to slow down and go inwards.
